Woman Airlifted after being Trapped Under a Large Rock near Independence

A woman was airlifted to a regional trauma center Sunday after emergency crews rescued her from beneath a large rock in Buchanan County. According to a social media post by the Independence fire department, firefighters were dispatched around 3:00 p.m. to the 3000 block of Overland Boulevard after reports of a woman trapped by a falling rock. When crews arrived, they found a large boulder had shifted and spun, pinning the woman’s legs underneath it. Emergency responders used specialized rescue equipment to safely free the woman from beneath the rock. Because of the severity of her injuries, the woman was transferred to an Air Care helicopter and flown to a regional trauma center for a higher level of care. The cause of the incident remains unclear. No additional information about the woman’s condition was immediately available.
