Sports June 2nd

The boys and girls state soccer tournaments take place this week. Boys quarterfinal games will be played at regional sites tonight, then the semifinals and finals will be played at Mediacom Stadium in Des Moines Wednesday through Friday. The girls state soccer tournament is being hosted by Iowa State University. Quarterfinal games in all three classes will be played Tuesday, semifinals are Thursday, then the championship games are scheduled for Saturday.

The Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association released its new rankings yesterday. Remsen St. Mary’s is top ranked in 1A, Underwood leads 2A, Wahlert stays at #1 in class 3A, and Waukee leads the 4A rankings. Locally, Western Dubuque is up three spots to third in 3A.

The NBA and NHL finals begin this week. In the NBA, Oklahoma City hosts Indiana for game 1 of the finals on Thursday, and NHL Stanley Cup Finals start Wednesday in Edmonton with the Oilers hosting Florida.
