Sports July 20th

The High School Baseball and Softball State Tournaments begin today. For softball, all five classes have first round games to open the double-elimination format tournament. All teams will have at least one game on Tuesday as well. For baseball, the 1A and 3A quarterfinals are today. Here are area state tournament games:

1A Softball – Ed-Co vs Exira-EHK-Audobon 12 PM

3A Softball – West Delaware vs Wahlert Catholic 3:45 PM

4A Softball – Western Dubuque vs Winterset 12:45 PM on KDST

1A Baseball – North Linn vs St. Mary’s, Remsen 4:30 PM

3A Baseball – Western Dubuque vs North Polk 1:30 PM

Class 2A and 4A baseball state quarterfinal games are Tuesday. In 2A, Beckman Catholic faces Cascade at Carroll. You can listen to that game on KDST tomorrow, with a scheduled start of 4:30 PM.

Spain has won it’s second men’s World Cup title. Spain defeated defending champ Argentina 1-0 in Extra Time on Sunday in New Jersey.

New Zealand’s Ryan Fox won the 154th Open Championship on Sunday as he picked up the first major championship in his golf career. Fox birdied the 18th at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England to finish at -10 for the tournament, one shot better than American Cameron Young.
