Mount Vernon Man Charged after Two-Vehicle Rollover Crash on Highway 30

A Mount Vernon man was injured in a two-vehicle rollover crash on Highway 30 Wednesday. According to a news release from the Linn County Sheriff's Department, at about 8:35 am, Linn County Deputies along with emergency crews were dispatched to a two-vehicle accident with injuries at Highway 30 just west of Old River Road. The release states that a Hyundai Santa Cruz, driven by 70-year-old John Thorton of Mount Vernon, was traveling westbound on Highway 30, passing vehicles in the truck acceleration lane. As the lane was ending, Thorton made an unsafe lane change across multiple lanes, clipping a Chevy Blazer driven by 45-year-old Mark Whitley of Martelle. Thorton then lost control and rolled into the median several times, landing in the median of Highway 30. Thornton was transported by Area Ambulance to St. Luke’s Hospital with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries. Whitley was not injured. Thornton was cited for unsafe passing. The crash remains under investigation by the Linn County Sheriff’s Office.
