The Dubuque County supervisors agreed to fund around $2.8 million in capital projects next fiscal year as they wrapped up budget sessions last week. They approved most county departments’ requests, but the supervisors vetoed funding for a few projects. The supervisors emphasize that the county’s financial strain is compounded by a growing operational deficit and the state limits on taxing. Among projects the supervisors will fund are infrastructure improvements such as a secondary roads maintenance shop in Holy Cross. They also approved increased funding for departments in need of more staff — an additional deputy and other staffing needs for the county recorder's office, as well as another correctional officer for the county jail. The supervisors voted to keep the total countywide levy the same.
