The Asbury City Council made decisions on two issues at it's Tuesday meeting. The council narrowly approved the first reading of a controversial ordinance Tuesday night that would allow ATVs and UTVs on city streets. The council voted 3-2 following a packed public hearing. The proposal aims to align local traffic laws with a 2022 Iowa state law. The ordinance must pass two more readings before it officially becomes law. The second reading is scheduled for the next city council meeting on August 4th. The Council also unanimously passed a 180-day moratorium on data centers on Tuesday. City officials said the freeze takes effect immediately. The pause gives the council time to study, review, and gather public input before implementing a permanent ordinance. City leaders cited a need to evaluate the impacts of data centers on land, infrastructure, and the environment. No one spoke about data centers during the public comment portion of Tuesday’s meeting. The county is currently under a 12-month moratorium on data centers.
