The Drake Relays high school events began Thursday. Here are the results for local athletes from yesterday’s events:
Boys 3200 – Western Dubuque senior Quentin Nauman won with a time of 8:57.64, 2.7 seconds in front of 2nd place
Girls 3000 – Monticello freshman Mary Grace Lyon was 21st at 10:24.56 (winning time was 9:34.75)
Boys High Jump – Western Dubuque junior Oscar Duve placed third at 6’6”, and Cascade junior Spencer Casey tied for 14th at 6’2” (winning height 7’)
Girls Shot Put – Ed-Co junior Kendall Wittman was 16th at 38’5.75” (winning distance was 47’09.75”
High school events resume this morning at Drake Stadium in Des Moines
The Dubuque County American Legion baseball team will be in action tonight and Saturday. Tonight they are scheduled to play Hiawatha at Epworth at 7 pm, then on Saturday will face Swisher at Legion Field in Cascade at 11 am.
As expected, the Las Vegas Raiders selected Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza with the first pick in the NFL Draft Thursday night. The Jets went defense at #2, taking Texas Tech edge David Bailey, and Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love is headed to Arizona which had the third pick. Kansas City traded up to sixth and took LSU corner Mansoor Delane, then used #29 on Clemson defensive tackle Peter Woods. Minnesota selected Florida defensive tackle Caleb Banks at #18, and Chicago used its first round pick to take Oregon safety Dillon Thieneman. Rounds 2 and 3 of the NFL Draft are tonight.
